ABOUT

FROM AFAR — A Generative Art Experience is a digital showcase of new photographic diptychs compiled during the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by the collapse of a small town, this collection of photos reference my long-standing fondness of abandoned spaces found along the open road. Towards the end of 2020 and throughout early 2021, I found great solace in exploring and photographing these spaces as the more crowded spots I used to frequent were best viewed from afar. Being able to return to my element gave me much needed clarity during one of the darkest periods in my life, and those muddled feelings of confusion and despair disappeared in those few moments.

To fully embrace our post-pandemic digital existences, I modified these diptychs by processing them using the p5.js editor to create four new pixelated generative works per original diptych. Throughout each diptych, I focus my lens on the architecture that defines the space it inhabits. As the viewer scrolls, they move closer to the subject, expanding each image until the pixels break away to reveal a much clearer vision; similar to my own personal experience described above. Once the viewer reaches the end of each pixelated series, the building remains tell stories of their own, through nostalgic scenery, that mimic my own perception of humanity during this pandemic; that even though we may feel abandoned, broken, and weak right now, we remain strong and continue to stand our ground.
